PROGRAM OPTIONS AND PRICING
Using Skype (or Google Hangouts) along with Google Docs, our high-quality, private tutorials allow for an "in person" feel but with several unusual benefits. While the video component is only used for the first couple of minutes (to say hello and re-establish connection) and again at the end of the session (to sign off), nearly the entire hour is spent focusing deeply on the student's work, as well as on prompts and exercises designed to address his or her particular needs. Each session is followed up with a friendly email from Mary, summarizing the lesson content and providing encouragement as well as a reminder about upcoming work. These "Recaps" reinforce the student's learning and sense of accomplishment; they also create a continuing mode of support between meetings, as well as a fairly detailed record for parents, who never have to wonder what (or whether!) their child is learning.
Weekly sessions last a full 60 minutes; bi-monthly tend to run a bit longer, approximately 70-75 minutes. Each tutorial is designed to suit the particular needs, goals and learning style of the student. Creative Writing tutorials focus on mastering the chosen genre and the student’s unique aims and progress from week to week, while academic / expository tutorials commonly include the following:
The Chase Hill School offers three program options: weekly, bi-monthly or single-project. These personalized programs are suitable for students working at any level, from middle-school through college, in any genre–from persuasive essays to poems, and everything in between. To support the diverse goals and preferences of our students, our programs also allow complete flexibility in regard to assignments, which we usually either provide or co-create with students. Families are also welcome to use their own assignments or assignments required for other courses; they may even choose to focus on a formal essay one month, and a short story or a group of poems, the next, allowing the student's current interests and inspiration to take hold of the assignment steering wheel, so to speak. Parents who would like to observe or participate are always more than welcome.
Admittedly, enrollment at Chase Hill is not inexpensive. There is, however, a great deal of "invisible work" that goes into customizing each student's program and providing outstanding service to our families. In order to give our students the best possible learning experience, while also supporting the various wishes and goals of both students and parents, Mary spends an additional average of 30-60 minutes per tutorial session: pre-session, she carefully reads the student's most recent work, creates a lesson based on her assessment of its strengths and weaknesses; she then provides an encouraging post-session "recap"--as well as the following on-going services:
In short, the level of expertise, customization, and flexibility; the dedication that goes into each student's learning process; and the range of support that Chase Hill offers to both students and parents alike takes a lot of time--and really can't be matched. Tutorials cover all phases of the writing process, from pre-writing and outlining to polishing.
THE CHASE HILL BI-MONTHLY PROGRAM: Two monthly, hour-long tutorials, $300 per month
This program is identical to the Chase Hill Student Program, except that tutorials take place every two weeks and unusually run a bit longer, approximately 70-75 minutes. Perfect for those with longer pieces or writers who enjoy more time for revising.
THE CHASE HILL SINGLE-PROJECT PROGRAM: Advanced revision assistance on three complete drafts of a 1-15 page project, $450
